The Washington Lacrosse
Officials Association (WALOA), LAXWORLD, and STX sponsored the first
Coach’s Clinic of the 2005 season at the Seattle Pacific University
campus November 14. Division 1 coaching legend Tony Seaman of Towson
State and his protégé, Stan Ross of Butler University, provided
superb coaching information to the coaches that managed to arrive
for the training early on a Sunday morning. Coaches Seaman and Ross
are a wealth of coaching knowledge, and they shared that knowledge
with a select few Washington, and British Columbia, coaches. Tim
Whitehead, who traveled down from Vancouver, was impressed with the
presentation. “We just don’t get this kind of coaching insight out
here”, said Tim. Vern Smith of the Maple Valley Vandals, echoed his
thoughts, “Impressive clinic! I learned a lot today”. A Face-Off
Clinic held by Ben DeFelice, #2 face-off man in 2004 in the nation
out of Towson State, now contracted with Philadelphia Barrage, held
the coach’s attention as they got the tips and tricks from one of
the best in the game. John Pidgeon, representing the new Central
Washington University team in Ellensburg said, “It was well worth
the trip! I got more out of these guys in three hours than I have in
many two-day clinics. This was awesome!”
A.T. Bailey from Laxworld staff was pleased with the turnout, and
the quality of the questions. “We put on these clinics all around
the country, bringing in D-1 coaches to discuss coaching techniques
with college, high school, and youth coaches. The excitement and
commitment here in the coaches today shows me why lacrosse is
growing so quickly here in Washington State. We would love to come
back again next year if the schedule works out.”
WALOA chairman Erik Smith was also pleased with the turnout. “WALOA
is committed to improving Washington lacrosse coaching and
officiating on all levels. By co-sponsoring this LAXWORLD Coach’s
Clinic, we show we truly are the “Third Team” on the field. We had
about 50 coaches out this year, and hope to double that next year.
While several coaches traveled from quite a distance, I was a little
surprised that more of the “local” coaches did not show up. It’s not
every day that top Division 1 coaches make a trip to Washington to
help our coaching programs...”
WALOA is also sponsoring lacrosse official’s training sessions for
new and returning lacrosse officials. Further information is
