GAMBIER, Ohio (Mar.
27, 2004) Trailing by four goals in the fourth quarter, the
Kenyon College lacrosse team staged a remarkable rally that
ended in a 12-11 win over the St. Vincent College Bearcats.
Sophomore Sean ONeill (Darnestown, MD/Bullis) capped
off the rally by scoring the game-winning goal with just 16
seconds left in the Saturday afternoon contest.
Facing an 11-7 deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter,
the Lords pulled one goal closer when Luke Larson (Mercer
Island, WA/Seattle Academy) scored on an unassisted play.
Less than one minute later, Larson gathered in a pass from
ONeill and fired in another goal, pulling the Lords within
two goals with just over ten minutes to play.
Meanwhile, a St. Vincent team that scored 11 goals in the
first three quarters was being overpowered and shut down by
the Kenyon defense. At the back of the Lords defense was
goalkeeper Dave Neiman (Glencoe, IL/New Trier), who
played a fantastic game and chalked up 17 saves.
With about five minutes left in the contest, Jason McCaw
(Cincinnati, OH/Indian Hill) netted another Kenyon goal on
an assist from Sean Wheeler (Darien, CT/Brunswick School).
From that point on, ONeill took control of the game as he
scored the game-tying goal at the 2:22 mark and then recorded
the game-winner in the final seconds.
ONeill finished with three goals and four assists for the
Lords, who improved their record to 3-3. McCaw and Walker each
added three goals, while Wheeler and Ross Zachary
(Greenwich, CT/Scarsdale) had two assists apiece.
The Bearcats, who fell to 5-2 with the loss, controlled most
of the three first quarters, although the Lords helped out
with 13 penalties and 14 penalty minutes. The Bearcats wound
up scoring on five extra-man advantages, but did not score at
all during Kenyons four minutes of penalty time in the fourth
quarter.
Ian Poole and Vince Chiodo each scored three goals for the
Bearcats, while goalkeeper Peter DeSantis faced 23 Kenyon
shots and made seven saves.
The Lords can now rest for a week before they host Ohio
Wesleyan University on Saturday, April 3. That NCAC game has a
1:00 pm start time.
