Ongoing discussions between the Panthers Lacrosse Club executive committee,
respective parents boards, Prep parents and players, finally began bearing
fruit for the Panthers boys and girls Lacrosse programs. Both programs
gained acceptance from new Athletic Director, Jeff Pietz for Lacrosse as a
Varsity sport. The Girls Panthers Lacrosse Club was started by Seattle
Prep parent John Verrilli in the fall of 1999. In their inaugural Spring
season of 2000, 32 girls played in the JV Division of the Washington School
Girls Lacrosse Association (WSGA) under head coach Stephanie Donkin from the
University of Washington. In the Spring of 2001, Stephanie Cone became
their second coach and the team competed in both the Varsity and JV
Divisions of the WSGLA.
Concurrently Matt Cone volunteered to coach the inaugural Boys Panthers
Lacrosse Club that same year with Prep parent Hugh Bangasser as a
representative for the Club and competed in the JV Division. Under the Cones
leadership in the Spring of 2002 the Girls had a JV, B and A Varsity teams
and won the Western States Tournament at Stanford University. That same year
the Boys had JV and Varsity teams and won the Division 2 State Championship.
Last season, the Cones returned for their 3rd and final year. The boys
continued with 2 teams and competed in the State playoffs finishing 3rd in
Division; the girls having 3 teams and repeating as Western States
Tournament Champions at Stanford University and then winning the WSGLA
Varsity State Championship at Seahawk Stadium. .
In 2002 the Girls and Boys Panthers Lacrosse Boards were formed comprised of
many devoted Prep parents, and head coaches that helped support and expand
the program to its current status and chaired by Eddie Travers in 2003. Prep
parents Patti Travers will represent the Girls and M.A. Sangeorzan the Boys
on the John Goodwin Club that advises Athletic Director Jeff Pietz along
with other parents for the other Varsity sports at Prep this Spring. Prep
had found something that quickly reached a tipping point with athletes from
other sports and kids who just wanted to try something new.
As part of a five year process, this will enable Seattle Prep boys and
girls, to be mentioned at school assemblies, gain respect from peers, and
wear a varsity letter for a sport that includes more than 16 percent of the
school. The Panthers boys and girls boards put together a proposition
accepted by Prep with input from various other athletic boosters for other
sports.
Some important gains are:
- permission to bring sticks and store equipment on school grounds
- possibility of using school transportation
- validation for all student athletes involved
- posting of awards and accolades in the school gymnasium
- financial funding of equipment over time
This will be a gradual process fostered by the coaches at Seattle Prep
and the Athletic Director focusing on the importance of recognition and
support of Prep students. Although, this is a major milestone, much
work is needed to be done in the meantime. Transition such as this can
prove to be greatly beneficial to the program or detrimental if not handled
well.
In addition, this spring the Seattle Prep Girls Lacrosse team will have a
new Varsity Head Coach, Sarah Medwell, a 2003 graduate from the University
of Denver and their Lacrosse program. The Seattle Prep Boys Lacrosse team
will be led by Head Coach Fred Wilmot who assisted Matt Cone in the past and
played Lacrosse at the Naval Academy.
Fred Wilmot, Head Panthers boys coach, had this to say, "My only hope is
that other programs can benefit from the developments here at Prep. We
have a super supportive parents group, very motivated students, and an
administration that sees the benefit of all this energy." He adds, "
Although this has the same challenges as going WIAA for a club Lacrosse
program, I am very excited about the growth and support the Athletic
Department has shown". |
