Joe Romano Named NDNU's First
Lacrosse Coach
Joe Romano was selected as the first men's
lacrosse coach in NDNU history by Director of
Athletics Doug Locker. Men's lacrosse will become
a varsity sport beginning with the 2003-2004
academic year, and becomes the first varsity
program at the scholarship level in the west.
Romano will also serve as Assistant Director of
Athletics working with the newly formed NDNU
Athletic Booster Club, summer camps and
recruitment and retention within the athletic
department.
"Joe is a terrific young coach who brings much
energy and knowledge to our program" said Locker.
"Under Joe's leadership I expect that lacrosse
will grow quickly at NDNU into a highly
competitive program. He is a winner in everything
he does and we are very fortunate to have him"
added Locker.
Romano comes to NDNU after having been at
Whittier College for the past 6 years, 4 as a
player and 2 as the head assistant lacrosse coach
under Locker. During his tenure as an assistant,
Whittier compiled an overall record of 22-6 and
reached the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals in
2002 having been ranked # 8 in the nation that
same season. As a player Romano was a four year
letterwinner and served as a two year captain. He
was selected as the teams Best Defensive Player as
a sophomore and the Most Inspirational Player as a
junior. Over his four years as a player Whittier
compiled an overall record of 61-11 winning 2
League Championships. Romano is a graduate of
Penncrest HS in Media, Pennsylvania.
