ST. PAUL
-
The
Minnesota State High School League has voted down a proposal to add boys'
lacrosse to its list of sponsored sports.
The
amendment to make it a league-sponsored sport failed by two votes. It needed a
two-thirds majority - 55 yes votes - to pass. The league's representative
assembly voted 53-30 at its meeting in St. Paul on Tuesday.
"We'll be
coming back," said Howard Rogers, a board member of Minnesota Lacrosse, which
runs the sport on an amateur level.
There are
44 boys' club teams, Rogers said, and eight schools that offer letters for
playing lacrosse.
Before the
vote, Rogers told the representative assembly that eight to 15 schools were
prepared to field varsity teams this spring.
The high
school league sponsored its first girls' lacrosse state tournament in the
spring of 2002.
