THE WEEKLY BEAT March 15-20, 2004
SCOREBOARD

Derek Mills of
Roughriders LC looks to drive to the cage against Garfield in a jamboree
held on Bainbridge
Island just prior to the season. The jamboree included 20 teams from
Idaho, Oregon,
British Columbia, Alberta and Washington.
RECAP
March Madness is
upon usand Im not referring to basketball. So much for easing into the
season as week one
was full of buzzer beaters, overtimes, upsets and great performance
Just lacrosse style!
**The biggest newsSeattle
Prep 9, Bainbridge 8 (OT)no, that isnt a misprint.
Bainbridge was
beaten for the first time in just over 2 years. Their last loss came in the
2001 state
championship to Mercer Island. More historythe last time the Spartans lost
in
the regular season,
2000, a 14-7 defeat at the hands of Lakeside.
This game included a
little bit of everything. Bainbridge led 4-3 at halftime. Prep decided to
make a change in
net. Didnt seem to help as Bainbridge stretched to an 8-5 lead headed into
the 4th.
Prep would rally. Alex Aigner won the majority of face-offs all day long and
this proved
huge as Preps
3-goal surge to tie the game came all within the last 5 minutes. Then Aigner
ended it himself
scoring midway through the 1st OT, sparking a wild celebration
seldom seen
from opponents on
Bainbridge Island.
Aigner finished with
2g,1a as did fellow midfielder Adam Sangeorson. Shane ONeil had a
tremendous game as
well netting 3 goals included a couple lefty lasers to the corner. Darren
Pinney
and Mike Travers
split time in net making 6 and 5 saves respectively.
**Three programs
earned their first "W" ever in their brief history. After an 0-10 season
last year,
Mukilteo started the
year off right notching their first ever win with a 7-5 victory over San
Juan.
San Juan rebounded
well however and earned their first official varsity win by defeating
Eastlake 6-3.
The other Dragons,
from Tacoma, also picked up win #1 with an OT thriller of their own, 6-5
over
North Kitsap.
**Seattle Prep,
Nathan Hale, Mercer Island and Eastside all had great opening weeks.
Each team sits at
2-0 a top the standings in their respective conferences.
** Preps big win
wasnt the only big win of week one. In Division II play, Vashon pulled what
many consider a mild
upset in defeating Garfield 12-11. Vashon defeated Garfield in last years
DII quarterfinals,
but graduated several key players. Garfield figured to have the edge, but
Vashon
scored with 4
seconds left in the game to pull out another victory over the Bulldogs.
TOP PERFORMERS
SEATTLE PREP
PANTHERSPrep 9, Bainbridge 8, not much more needs said.
A win like this
takes a team effort. Congrats to all!
JACK ANDREWS, SR,
Attack, EASTSIDE...In 2001,
Eastside competed at the Division I level.
Then a freshman,
Andrews had the highest scoring game of his young career in a win over Maple
Valley.
Since then Eastside
had moved down to Division II and Andrews had been tearing up the DII ranks.
After
leading the Ravens
to a DII title in '03, Andrews is back in DI and apparently picking up where
he left off...
5 goals and another
victory over Maple Valley. Andrews added another 5 in helping defeat Curtis
(a rematch of last
years DII final) for a 10 goal week.
DANE LORAAS, JR,
Attack, VASHON...Lorass started the season with a bang,
ripping the nets
for 7 goals in
Vashon's opening game. Lorass scored his 7th goal with 4 seconds left to
give Vashon a huge
early season victory
over the Bulldogs. He also added 2 assists for a 9pt effort. Cant start the
season much
better than this!
CORY HILL, Attack,
TACOMACory scored his first career hat-trick, including
the game winner in
sudden-death
overtime, to lead Tacoma to its programs firct victory.
COLBY LEED, Attack,
SAN JUANColbys story is a lot like Corys. Colby also
scored his first
career hat-trick as
part of his 5 goals on the week. He also recorded 20 groundballs in the 2
games.
His efforts helped
lead San Juan to a first ever win.
GAMES TO WATCH
3/23 Lakeside @
RoughridersFirst inner-Division match-up of the year and
is also part of the
MBLL standings.
Roughriders played DI opponents tough a year ago. This game should help
gauge the
level between DI and
DII in 2004.
3/23 Seattle Prep @
Nathan HaleHow will Prep react coming off their big
victory? Remember,
Hale beat the
Panthers 11-7 in the second half of last season. One team will take the
early season lead atop
the Sound
Conference.
3/23 Vashon @ S.
KitsapSK Wolves finally get their season underway.
Important early season
match-up as both
should contend for the Olympic Conference in DII.
3/25 Issaquah @
OverlakeTwo 03 playoff teams had high scoring weeks to
start 04.
