WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL BOYS LACROSSE
ASSOCIATION
Minutes of August 11, 2003 Board Meeting
131: The Board meeting
of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse
Association was held on Monday, August 11, 2003 at
7:10 P.M. at the offices of Steve Corley, Bellevue,
Washington. Present were Dave Low, Steve Corley,
Brandon Fortier, Chris Long, Tony Olney and Gail
Shelton. Present by tele-conference were Vern Smith
and Rob Hawley.
132: The Eastside/Lake
Washington/Eastlake decision was reviewed and again
the Board expressed the desire to align every
lacrosse program with a high school rather than have
regional teams. The Board also pledged to assist
the new Eastlake Lacrosse Club as well as the other
first year teams wherever possible.
133: A proposal
regarding fall field lacrosse from Chris Long was
discussed. Chris had written a proposal to the
Board requesting a loan to enable him to reserve
fields for fall lacrosse in Seattle. Players would
pay $1-$5 each time they participated and it would
be open to every player in the league. Chris was
disappointed by the lack of response from other
coaches in the league, but it was pointed out that
many of the coaches are not thinking lacrosse at
this time of year. Chris will continue his attempts
to organize the fall field lacrosse program.
134: Dave reviewed the
work currently in progress as it pertains to the
development of the WHSBLA Handbook. Additional
items to be included in the Handbook were discussed.
135: The subject of
off-season lacrosse was taken up. While our mission
is to promote boys high school lacrosse, it is also
to instill the values of scholastic achievement and
individual development of players. Many coaches
expressed their desire that players participate in a
variety of sports and other activities throughout
the year. It was noted that between indoor
lacrosse, summer league, summer camps and the spring
season, at least six months of lacrosse is available
for players.
136: MOTION Coaches
can have formal and organized contact with players
from the beginning of spring sports until the first
day of fall turnouts with the exception of
first year teams who can begin formal and organized
contact with players beginning January 1. PASSED
137: Dates for the
2003/2004 season are as follows:
August 18, 2003 End of formal/organized
contact with players
March 1, 2004 Begin formal/organized
contact with players
This rule does not
prohibit indoor or outdoor organized play, but it
does prohibit head or assistant coaches from
being involved or coaching during these periods.
138: League structure
and alignment for the 2004 season was discussed and
although it is the Boards desire to be able to put
in place a long-term plan, it is not possible at
this time because of the rapid growth of the
league. Discussion regarding expansion of Division
I from eight to ten or twelve teams was lengthy.
139: MOTION
The Board will re-evaluate each year the alignment
of the league. For the 2004 season, Division I will
consist of ten teams and will include the finalists
from the 2003 Division II. Division I will consist
of the following:
Sound
Mountain
Bainbridge Island
Mercer
Island
Lakeside
Bellevue
Panthers (Seattle Prep)
Maple Valley
Nathan Hale
Eastside
Port Angeles
Curtis
Each team will play
twice in their conference (home and away) and play
each team once in the opposing conference.
PASSED
140: The Cascade League/JV subject was discussed
at length. The topic was tabled until Board members
can contact coaches they represent to determine
where they stand on this issue.
141: Discussion
regarding walax.com centered on defining how WHSBLA
can separate itself from the for-profit side of the
website and also maintain editorial control over
matters involving the League. It was agreed that
walax.com provides valuable information to the
lacrosse community, but the League (non-profit)
needs to create a line of separation between itself
and walax.com (for-profit). Dave Low has agreed to
contact Fred Wilmot to discuss this matter.
142: King County Active
Sports and Youth Recreation Commission is
strongly encouraging participation in a survey
for Park usage in the future. There are already
several planned field closures for the 2004 season
that will affect a number of Seattle lacrosse teams.
The Board requested that all coaches log on to the
following website and take the time to fill out an
online survey. Lacrosse needs to be kept in front
of the people making decisions regarding playfields:
http://dnr.metrokc.gov/parks/survey/
This is a 17-question
survey that will take less than five minutes to
complete.
143:The meeting
adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
Gail Shelton,
Secretary
