NOTES & REVIEW

Division I

*Mercer Island found some revenge and then some with a 20-3 lashing of Lakeside.  The win pushes the Islanders back into 2nd place with a rematch against Bainbridge on the horizon.  The usual suspects, Larson and Gillis and a big game from Chirls sparked the victory.

Division II

*Vashon ended the Roughriders bid for an undefeated season with a hard earned 6-5 victory.  Hat-tricks from Ben Sommers and Alex Craignhead, and 15 saves from Eli Steffen paved the way.  Sophomore Dane Lorass also chipped in with a hat-trick of assists.

*Congratulations to Mt. Rainier on their first victory of the year.  A thriller, as Mt. Rainier scored at the buzzer to pull out a 6-5 victory over North Kitsap.

*After a 1-3 start, Bainbridge had a two-win week to get back in the playoff hunt.  The big win came on Friday as the Spartans avenged an earlier season loss, knocking off Garfield 5-1.

 Cascade League

*More news on the Nathan Hale situationThe program decided it best to bring two freshman down from the Division I varsity squad, thus their decision to withdraw from the Cascade League.  (The following is an update on the current JV team, courtesy of Nathan Hale.)

MERCER ISLAND, WA - The Nathan Hale JV team overcame a 5-0 deficit in the 2nd quarter to beat the previously undefeated Mercer Island Cascade Team, 12-11 on Thursday night.  Hale shut out MI in the second quarter, while scoring three of their own.  Hale caught a spark when Daniel Bash picked up a loose ball in the Hale defensive end and sprinted toward the MI goal, dodged two defenders and buried a high bounce shot into the goal.

Hale took the lead into the fourth quarter 8-7, and was able to extend the lead to 12-9 late in the fourth quarter.  A furious MI rally cut the lead to 12-11 with 49 seconds left, but a wide MI shot was chased down by Hale and the victory was sealed.

"I can't get this smile off of my face," said Chris Long, Hale Lacrosse Coach.  "I am very proud of the effort by this team - they emptied their tanks tonight.  Every single one of these boys contributed to this victory, I am so happy for the boys - they did a great great job tonight.  Make no mistake about it, this is the biggest win and the most complete game I have seen in my two years here.'

Eight different players registered a point for the Raiders.  Complete statistics from the game will be posted on walax.com soon.

The Nathan Hale Varsity team will be back in action on Monday 5pm at Lakeside, followed immediately by a JV game (7pm).

TOP PERFORMERS

Alan Chirls-Junior, Attack, Mercer Island

The brother of Mercers basketball star Kevin Chirls and the wingman to the Islanders top attackman, Luke Larson, Alan is making a name for himself this spring.  Chirls is the Islanders 3rd leading scorer behind Larson and Gillis.  This week he had a season best 6-goal effort as part of the Islanders 20-3 win at Lakeside.

Neal Bateman-Attack, Bainbridge

Bateman had a good week, finishing 5 goals in helping spark a Spartan resurgence.  He had 3 goals against Franklin on Tuesday and added 2 more in a mild upset of Garfield on Friday.

Ben Sommers-Senior, Midfield, Vashon

Just weeks before the season began, it was unknown whether or not Sommers would even be able to play as he recovered from a neck injury.  Play he has, leading Vashon from the midfield all season.  This week, Sommers had 3 goals, 1 assist in a big 6-5 vicotry over the Roughriders.

GAMES TO WATCH (April 28- May 3)

4/29 Bainbridge D2 @ RoughridersCan Roughriders rebound and keep hold on Metro #1 or will Spartans continue playoff push?

4/30 Curtis @ VashonVashon now has a shot to claim top spot in Olympic Conference and spoil Vikings undefeated run.  Word from the south sound is that Curtis has lost a few starters due to academics.  Vikings could be reeling a bit.

5/2 Overlake @ IssaquahBattle for 2nd place in the Inland-North.

5/2 Panthers @ Maple ValleyMust win for the Vandals if to have any chance of catching the Panthers for a playoff spot.
