NOTES & REVIEW

Division I

* Another relatively light week. Panthers on spring break this week as everyone else returns to action. We are well over the half way mark as only 3 weeks remain in the regular season. As you can see, several teams still have 6 or 7 games to play in those 3 weeks, so a lot is still to be decided.

Preseason Prediction   Current Standings (unofficial) W-L
1) Bainbridge   1) Bainbridge 7-0
2) Mercer Island   2) Lakeside 4-2
3) Lakeside   3) Mercer Island 4-2
4) Nathan Hale   4) Panthers 6-3
5) Bellevue   5) Nathan Hale 2-4
6) Panthers   6) Bellevue 1-4
7) Maple Valley   7) Maple Valley 1-4
8) Port Angeles   8) Port Angeles 0-6

Bainbridge- As advertised, the Spartans have essentially cruised to a 7-0 start. They seem poised and ready to defend their title.

Lakeside- Lions rebounded well from an early season loss to Bellevue. Lakeside has wins over Panthers and Mercer Island giving them the current edge in the race for 2nd place. John Fluke and Kyle Lane have lead the way with 33 goals between the two.

Mercer Island- Islanders have been fairly steady all season. Mercer has plenty of firepower on the offensive end in Larson, Gillis and Chirls. Theyll need to shore up defensively if they expect to get back to the finals. In 6 games, the Islanders have given up 57 goals.

Panthers- Although the Panthers have 2 more wins than Lakeside and Mercer Island, their 3 losses are to all three teams listed above them. Plus, the Panthers already have 2 wins against 0-6 Port Angeles. Nevertheless, the Panthers have far exceeded expectations and sit in a good position to clinch a playoff spot in year one at the Division I level.

Nathan Hale- Not quite the first half start the Raiders had hoped for. They do have 2 wins over Port Angeles, but have yet to have a breakthrough win. A strong finish could keep them in 5th place, but playoffs might be out of reach.

Bellevue- An early season win over Lakeside had the Wolverines thinking playoffs again in 2003. Unfortunately it has been their only win to date. Bellevue still has a chance to get back in it with 2 games each against Nathan Hale and Maple Valley. However, Panthers have already beaten them twice.

Maple Valley- Ryan Johnson has produced numbers, but the Vandals have yet to find much support. Johnson has 15 goals, but no one else has more than 7. Also a shot to get back in it with games against Bellevue, Hale and Port Angeles left.

Port Angeles- Tough times for the Riders. Only scoring 4.5 goals a game.

Division II

NOTE: For statistical purposes, Division II standings have all teams listed together through sportability.com. Realize that Division II is in fact split into 3 conferences and playoffs will be determined based on standings within these conferences. Here are the conference standings:

  Olympic Conference       Metro Conference
Preseason Prediction Current Standings W-L   Preseason Prediction Current Standings W-L
1) Curtis 1) Curtis 7-0   1) Bainbridge D2 1) Roughriders 5-0

4) Klahowya 4) Klahowya 2-5   4) Franklin 4) Franklin 1-4

2) Overlake 2) Overlake 4-1
3) Issaquah 3) Issaquah 4-3
4) Snohomish 4) Snohomish 1-5
5) Mukilteo 5) Mukilteo 0-5

OLYMPIC CONFERENCE

Curtis-Not scoring or blowing teams out as much as they did a year ago a DIII. Yet, the Vikings are still undefeated and hold a 19 game winning streak. Vashon only real obstacle left to an Olympic Conference title.

Vashon-Still a shot of catching Curtis and barring disaster, should be a playoff lock. Incredible improvement over a year ago, a team that saw only one win.

Kitsap-The Wolves possess a decent offense, but must improve on defense. Their size and physical play have proved tough for opponents. Still in the running for playoffs.

Klahowya- Game effort from the first year squad as the Eagles have played several tight ball games. Unfortunately, unless they can pull a few quick upsets, will most likely be at home come playoff time.

North Kitsap- Gaining valuable experience as a first year club. Still looking for win #1.

METRO CONFERENCE

Roughriders-Biggest surprise in Division II thus far. If you believe in the slogan Defense wins Championships then the Roughriders are your squad. The green and gold rank 10th in Division II in scoring offense having scored only 31 goals. Yet, they sit in first at 5-0 because they rank 1st in scoring defense. The defensive unit of Rick Martell-Scott, Kurt Preuss, Danny Freeman, Nathan Vandergrift and Tony Maack have only allowed 12 goals. That is an amazing 2.4 goals/game!

Garfield-Another team on the rise, their only loss came in overtime to the before mentioned Roughriders. A very young and energetic team still has a shot to finish first, but would most likely have to win out.

Bainbridge (D2)-After reaching the DII finals a year ago, the Spartans have struggled. Bainbridge must get some wins quick or they might find themselves on the outside looking in.

Franklin- Quakers sit in the same boat as Bainbridge, but with a tougher schedule left. Will probably need at least 3 more wins to have any shot of grabbing a wildcard. Losses have all been close though so dont them out.

Mt. Rainier- Only played 3 games so far. Best chance to pick up a win will come against North Kitsap.

INLAND-NORTH CONFERENCE

Eastside-Only blemish is a 2-goal loss at Curtis. Ravens should certainly still be considered a favorite. Playoffs are a lock. Overlake and Bainbridge are the toughest opponents left on the schedule and only real obstacles to a conference title.

Overlake-Still a shot to catch Eastside, but regardless of the outcome, Owls should still clinch a playoff berth soon with games against Mukilteo and Mt. Rainier on the horizon.

Issaquah-Hovered around .500 all season. In solid position for a wildcard berth and can still reach #2 in the conference with a win against Overlake.

Snohomish-Titans have experienced much less success than a year ago in DIII. John Healy is one of the conferences top attackman, but has little to work with. Defense is big and physical, but with little structure.

Mukilteo-Predictable results from a 1st year program.

Cascade League

*Little action in the Cascade League this week, but the Panthers picked up two wins including a big win over Port Angeles.

Preseason Prediction   Current Standings W-L
1) Mercer Island   1) Mercer Island 5-0
2) Maple Valley   2) Maple Valley 4-1
3) Bellevue   3) Panthers 4-3
4) Panthers   4) Port Angeles 3-4
5) Nathan Hale   5) Bellevue 0-4
6) Curtis   5) Curtis 0-4
7) Port Angeles

*REMINDER: Nathan Hale has withdrawn from the Cascade League

TOP PERFORMERS

Sam Harlow-Roughriders, Attack

In the first four games of the year, Harlow failed to register a point. He picked a great time to break that streak, scoring 5 goals in an 8-4 victory over Franklin. The win keeps the Roughriders undefeated and atop the Metro Conference.

Nick Crowson- Senior, Lakeside, Goalie

In two games this week, Crowson made an outstanding 54 saves! In six games he has 108 meaning half of them occurred this week. He started off with a 26 save performance in a key win over Panthers. He followed that with a 28 save night against Bainbridge. Despite the loss, the 28 saves helped hold the Spartans to 9 goals (well below their average).

GAMES TO WATCH (April 21-April 26)

4/22 Mercer Island @ LakesideIslanders looking to avenge early season lossLions will control own destiny for 2nd place with a win.

4/23 Vashon @ RoughridersVashon needs win if they still have hopes of finishing first in the Olympic ConferenceCan the Roughriders continue to remain unbeaten?

4/25 Garfield @ Bainbridge D2Spartans need a win to right the shipGarfield needs win to keep pace with Roughriders
