The relatively lightest week of the year has set
the stage for a super finish in the 2002 season!!! Ten teams spent the
week spring-breaking and recharging for the final push. Except for a
few teams in Division 3, every team has played at least half their
schedule and the playoff pictures are starting to form!
Highlights
DIVISION 1
·
Division 1 continues to pack a ton of excitement. It also
continues to be the least clear as to who the final four will be. After
Bainbridge, parity is the next word when talking Division 1
·
Lakeside had a 5-3 lead on first place Bainbridge with
under 4 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, but once the
Spartans got it working….13-6 final score. The loss combined with the
loss three days prior to Port Angeles has the Lions in unfamiliar
territory. Sitting in 6th place, Lakeside has some work to
do if they are to keep alive their streak of making the playoffs.
·
The Spartan machine just keeps rolling. Two more games,
two more checks in the win column. Stat line this week…. Adam Smith
(4g, 4a), Tyler Bural (5g), Sam Cameron (5g, 1a), Ross Maloney (5g, 1a),
Scott Burkland (3g,1a) and Joe Picha (3g).
·
The Port Angeles boys nearly completed a perfect week.
They started with a huge win over Lakeside! The Riders have now put
themselves on the map and proved they do in fact belong in Division 1.
After a dismantling of Nathan Hale, the Riders held a potent Bellevue
squad to only 5 goals. The problem- Port Angeles only scored 4.
However, the two wins helped leapfrog Lakeside and Port Angeles now sits
in 5th place a game behind Maple Valley for the final playoff
spot. The Riders still have rematches with Maple Valley and Bellevue to
come as well as two games with bottom feeder Overlake. So, potential
for an 8-win season and a playoff birth is certainly there!
·
Another big win for Bellevue. The Wolverines are sitting
pretty at 6-3, in 3rd place and a match-up with 2nd
place Mercer Island on the horizon. Should Bellevue knock off the
Islanders, they would sit in 2nd place. Yes, the same
Bellevue squad that had gone a combined 2-23 the previous two years
would be in position to host a playoff game!
DIVISION 2
·
A less muddled picture in Division 2. Two more wins for
the Panthers and one for the Spartans as each look forward to an
upcoming rematch. Franklin sits in 3rd and Eastside in 4th.
If the second half of the season goes as the first, this would seem to
be the playoff order. The Roughriders look like the only squad with a
chance to break into the mix if they can knock off Eastside this time
around or Franklin a second time.
DIVISION 3
·
In case any are confused…Division 3 is split in two
divisions as follows:
East
West
Curtis
4-0 Issaquah
5-0
Port Angeles
3-1 Snohomish 3-2
Bainbridge
2-4 Garfield 1-3
Kitsap
0-4 Mt. Ranier 1-4
·
Each team plays each within their division twice and each
team in the other division once for a total of 10 games. The top two
teams in each division will make the playoffs. As you can see, half the
teams have yet to play halftheir season. So, the last month should
provide plenty of excitement as much remains to be determined. Curtis,
Issaquah, Snohomish and Port Angeles look to have the inside track at
this point. However, besides the two undefeateds, the remaining six
teams have negative goal differentials...things still remain wide
open!!!
