The stretch of Spring Breaks has started and
several teams had this week off. Looking at the standings you will find
some teams having played 8 games while others have only played 2!!! Not
to worry though…things will even out soon. With so many teams off, you
might expect an off week. Not so! In fact this may have been one of
the most exciting weeks in recent memory. All sorts of craziness in
Divisions 1 and 2. Let’s get to it!
Highlights
DIVISION 1
·
Nathan Hale won its first of the year! Congratulations to
Coach Long and the rest of the Raiders!!!
·
Bainbridge had the week off and seems a solid lock to hold
on to the top spot. On the other end, Nathan Hale and Overlake seem
already dismissed from playoff contention barring a huge turnaround.
Then it gets interesting. It looks as though five teams will mix it up
until the end for the final 3 playoff spots. The order they finish is
anybody’s guess.
·
Bellevue pulled off the first upset of the week in beating
Lakeside. The Wolverines clearly are the better team at the moment.
Yet, this still has to be considered a big upset as Lakeside has been a
perennial title contender for the past 5 seasons and Bellevue has spent
most of that time at the bottom of the league. I would venture to say
it has been a good 6 years since a Bellevue vs Lakeside affair has come
out in Bellevue’s favor. The Wolverines were lead by seniors Brandon
Deal (6g) and Andy Young (5g, 1a).
·
Maple Valley put the capper on the week of upsets by
upending previously unbeaten and defending state champion, Mercer
Island. The Islanders picked a bad week to play without top scorer Luke
Larson as they struggled a bit with Lakeside midweek before falling to
the Vandals. This is easily the biggest win Maple Valley has achieved
in their short time in Division 1.
·
So, now the middle of the pack is a scramble. Mercer sits
in second, but with a loss to Maple Valley. Maple Valley sits in third
with losses to Bellevue and Port Angeles. Bellevue is in fourth with
losses to Mercer and Maple Valley. Lakeside is in fifth with losses to
Bellevue and Mercer. And Port Angeles sits in sixth with losses to
Lakeside and Mercer, but a win over 3rd place Maple Valley.
Confusing? A bit…but it is going to make for an extremely exciting
battle for the playoffs. It is wide open!!!
DIVISION 2
·
Congratulations to the Vashon Vultures on their first
victory!
·
No more tie for first place. Franklin took care of that
by defeating Eastside and then promptly losing to the Roughriders. An
exciting game saw Franklin outlast Eastside to knock the Ravens from the
ranks of the unbeaten. However, the Roughriders picked a perfect week
to pull off an upset of their own. Now Eastside and Franklin sit locked
in second although Franklin has a win in hand.
·
After a slow start this season, the Roughriders have won
two straight and sit at 3-4. They now seem prepared to contend for a
playoff spot.
DIVISION 3
·
A very slow week in Division 3 as only two division games
took place. Curtis finally played their second game of the year and
remained unbeaten. Issaquah also held serve and stayed unbeaten as
well.
Top Performers
Just look at the
numbers. Maple Valley has scored 110 goals. These three have scored 74
of them. They currently sit in the top 10 in every statistical
category. Within Division 1, they rank as follows: 1,2,4 in points,
1,2,3 in assists, 1,3,7 in goals, 1,3,6 in points per game and 1,3,4 in
groundballs! Little needs to be said after that.
