Week Three

A little “March Madness”

Week in Review:

In attempting to keep pace with NCAA college basketball’s “March Madness”, the boy’s high school lacrosse season opened with a bit of craziness itself.

Maple Valley A wasted no time asserting itself in the “A” division with a surprise 8-5 defeat of defending state runner-up, Lakeside.  Goalie Mark Louvier made 13 saves and Adam Running and Weston Butt anchored strong defensive performance in shutting out Lakeside in the second half!!!  Brian Johnson led the Vandals offensive punch with 5 goals.

Port Angeles also pulled off what many might call a shocker in defeating Eastside 7-3.  The Roughriders seem well on their way to reigning supreme in the “B” league with a 3-0 start.  Strong defensive play and a 3 goal performance from Scott Cline led the upset against Eastside. Don’t tell the Vandals or the Roughriders  their big wins were upsets!  Both teams are ready to play and have helped kick off what seems to be a wide open season in 2001!

Mercer Island also opened the season with two straight wins including a 9-6 victory over a seemingly much improved Overlake squad.

I'm sure many have been surprised by results already and we are only in week one!  It's going to be an exciting season.  Stay tuned…

“Game of the Week” recap:

Maple Valley A @ Hale

The rematch of last year’s “B” final seemed a bit anti-climatic after Maple Valley’s big win over Lakeside.  However, the Vandals still came out and took care of business with a 14-5 victory.  The win stakes the Vandals to an early 2-0 record and a share of 1st place in the “A” division.

Check out the season results page for complete recaps of all action!

Top Performers of the Week:

Dave Biehn, Mercer Island

  • The senior attackman scored 7 goals and 7 assists in two games to pace Mercer Island to a 2-0 start and a share of 1st place in the “A” division.  Biehn’s efforts included a 10pt performance in Mercer Island’s season opening victory over Bellevue.

Brian Johnson, Maple Valley

  • The junior attackman led the offensive punch for the Vandals in helping Maple Valley to an early 2-0 record, a share a first place and a big victory over Lakeside.  An all-league performer in the “B” division a year ago, Johnson has picked up where he left off and showed he is one to watch in 2001.  Johnson’s two game effort totaled 9 goals.

Scott Cline, Port Angeles

  • The senior attackman has paced the Roughriders to 3-0 record including a 3goal performance in a big win over Eastside.  For the week, Cline notched 9 goals and assist.
