WHSBLA 2018 Quarterfinals Preview

WHSBLA 2018 Playoff Preview - Quarterfinals/Private Semifinals Story by Michael Thornbloom.

The first round is over and only eight teams remain in each division aside from the Private Division who will move straight into the semifinals due to a smaller bracket. A majority of the games last week were fairly one-sided other than two games that were separated by a single goal. The competition only gets better from here as the best of the best inch closer to each other on their road to Starfire.

1A/2A Quarterfinals

The West Valley Eagles finally punch their ticket to the quarterfinals after losing last year in the first round to the Liberty Patriots. They’ll have a tough match-up against the top team in the Northwest Division, the Burlington Edison Tigers. If Bellingham and Vashon win their games we could see a semifinal revenge match for the Vashon Pirate who were knocked out by the Red Raiders 15-5 before they could get their chance at the trophy.

Here’s our 1A/2A Division Quarterfinals:

May 18th

Liberty Patriots (KingCo) @ Vashon Pirates (Olympic)

May 19th

West Valley Eagles (Greater Spokane) @ Burlington Edison Tigers (Northwest)

Columbia River Chieftains (GSHL) @ Bellingham Red Raiders (Northwest)

North Kitsap Vikings (Olympic) @ White River Hornets (Pierce County)

3A Quarterfinals

The KingCo and Metro conferences have been dominating this year’s 3A bracket with five of the eight participating teams hailing from those conferences. The Rough Riders have made arguably their best playoff run in their history with a triple overtime win over Ballard and barely beating the Mt. Spokane Wildcats by a single goal. Bellevue is a clear favorite in their game but that Rider team has a lot of heart. We could have an Island War semifinals if both Bainbridge and Mercer Island come out with a win this week. They are both favorites in their respective games, so it could be likely they will meet each other before they get to Starfire.

Here’s our 3A Division Quarterfinals:

May 18th

Roosevelt Rough Riders (Metro) @ Bellevue Wolverines (KingCo)
● Winner plays - winner of Stanwood @ Peninsula

Lake Washington Kangaroos (KingCo) @ Bainbridge Spartans (Metro)
● Winner plays - winner of Mercer Island @ Snohomish

Stanwood Spartans (Wesco) @ Peninsula Seahawks (Olympic)
● Winner plays - winner of Roosevelt @ Bellevue

May 19th

Mercer Island Islanders (KingCo) @ Snohomish Panthers (Wesco)
● Winner plays - winner of Lake Washington @ Bainbridge

4A Quarterfinals

Not much is different about the 4A Quarterfinals from last year with five of the teams having repeat appearances. The Curtis Vikings are slated with another KingCo team but last year they had to face the 2017 4A State Champs the Skyline Spartans. If they can best the Woodinville Falcons this time around, they could have some revenge on an even bigger stage just before the championship. The Eastlake Wolves will get to face the Central Valley Bears who put up 19 goals in the first round against Sumner. The Wolves have been known to have a tough defense and putting up 16 goals last week themselves, will make for a tough game for the Bears.

Here’s our 4A Division Quarterfinals:

May 18th

Woodinville Falcons (KingCo) @ Curtis Vikings (Puget Sound)

Skyline Spartans (KingCo) @ Skyview Storms (GSHL)

May 19th

Wenatchee Panthers (Central) @ Tahoma Bears (Puget Sound)

Central Valley Bears (Greater Spokane) @ Eastlake Wolves (KingCo)

Private Semifinals

With a small bracket the Private Division gets to start their semifinals half a week before everyone else. The O’Dea Fighting Irish get to have their revenge against their heated rivals the Eastside Catholic Crusaders and will head into this match as the favorites. The Lakeside Lions were at the bottom of their conference this year with their only two wins coming from their games against Ballard. It’ll be a tough mountain to climb to beat a team that has outscored them this year 22-12 but they only need one win to get to Starfire and crazier things have happened in the playoffs.

Here’s our Private Division Semifinals:

May 18th

Eastside Catholic Crusaders (Metro) @ O’Dea Fighting Irish (Metro)

May 19th

Lakeside Lions (Metro) @ Seattle Prep Panthers (Metro)
