WHSBLA 2018 Playoffs Preview

It’s finally that time of year where the best lacrosse clubs Washington State has to offer will clash in the first round of the playoffs on their road to Starfire Stadium. We have some returning teams seeking vengeance for last year as well as some new faces looking to shake up last year’s competition. Lets see what the first round is going to bring us.

1A/2A First Round

The 1A/2A bracket will miss last year’s state champions the Seattle Academy Cardinals as they head down a new road in the Private Division. The Liberty Patriots were on a straight path to Starfire in the previous year’s playoff bracket but were stopped by the Cardinals one game short of the big game. Will they finally get their chance this year or will the Bellingham Red Raiders make a repeat appearance and walk away with the trophy?

Here’s our 1A/2A Division first round:

May 12th

Selah Vikings (Central) @ West Valley Eagles (Greater Spokane)
● Winner plays - Burlington Edison Tigers (Northwest)

Sehome Mariners (Northwest) @ Liberty Patriots (KingCo)
● Winner plays - Vashon Pirates (Olympic)

Overlake Owls (Metro) @ Columbia River Chieftains (GSHL)
● Winner plays - Bellingham Red Raiders (Northwest)

3A First Round

Big surprise this year is the absence of the Juanita rebels who made it all the way to the semi finals in the 2017 playoffs. The Lake Washington Kangaroos came out on top in a close 11-10 game against the Rebels and get their chance to prove that they have what it takes for a long playoff run. All eyes may turn back to another potential Mercer Island and Bellevue championship game as both teams have been dominating their schedule again this year.

Here’s our 3A Division first round:

May 11th

Ballard Beavers (Metro) @ Mercer Island Islanders (KingCo)
● Winner plays - Snohomish Panthers (Wesco)

Stanwood Spartans (Wesco) @ Stadium Tigers (Pierce County)

4A First Round

The 4A bracket is nearly identical to last year showing some steady consistency in these teams with repeat playoff berths. We do have three emerging teams that have outplayed their competition this year as we welcome in the Rogers Rams for their first playoff berth since their club’s inception, the Lewis & Clark Tigers and the Skyview Storms. Rogers had the long road of going through Auburn Riverside and South Kitsap just for their first round playoff berth and outscoring their opponents 33-10, hungry much?

Here’s our 4A Division first round:

May 11th

Jackson Timberwolves (Wesco) @ Tahoma Bears (Puget Sound)

Private School First Round

A surprise to see last year’s Private State Champion, the Eastside Catholic Crusaders, in the first round after the incredible season they had last year. Despite that, these Crusaders are on a four win streak bringing in dangerous momentum into the first round. The Seattle Prep Panthers and the O’Dea Fighting Irish get the first round bye this year sporting a phenomenal regular season. The anticipated return of the 1A/2A State Champs, the Seattle Academy Cardinals, were one game away from getting back on the road to Starfire before the Lakeside Lions put them to rest last Thursday.

● Winner plays - Seattle Prep Panthers (Metro)
