The story of the week for the Men’s A League was not on the field. Unfortunately, news outside of the lines was more prominent than what happened on the field turf this weekend. The Victoria Seaspray informed league officials that they would not be participating in the remaining games of the PNLA season.
This is a blow to the league on many fronts.
  1. League growth – It’s no secret that as lacrosse has had a renaissance in the Northwest. However, the Men’s A league has not been trending on the same plane as the youth and high school programs. You have to ask yourself – are we providing the fertile ground for new club teams to join and stay in our league? We have added new teams in recent years, but this is not a time to lose a squad – we need to be growing our league and recruiting new teams to join our ranks. There is a tremendous amount of history on Vancouver Island, the A league cannot afford to lose a team like the Seaspray for good.
  2. Social Activities – At this level, it’s not all about the game. It’s about the friendships that develop natively in the lacrosse experience. You hear about people collecting lacrosse “stories” – and that extends from the bonding that occurs before and after the game. One of the things I look forward to every season is a ferry ride over to Vancouver Island. Whether it’s the Clipper or the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay ferry – going to Victoria is an experience. You hang with your boys – take an overnight trip and rekindle a lot of the college lacrosse experience. There’s nothing like it.
  3. Travel – Let me ask you this…..Have you ever stayed at the Strathcona Hotel in Victoria? If you are nodding your head – you’ve undoubtedly slept in a very small bed for precious few (zero?) hours. To me, the Strathcona is part of the Victoria Summer Slam – as well as an overnight trip to the island for a league game. The bars are plentiful, the service friendly Canadian, and you are right in the mix as you step out your front door. Ride a scooter with rabbit ears? Go for it!
My hope is that the Victoria news is but a brief setback for the squad – and that they come back in full force in 2007. Lacrosse (not hockey!) is the national sport of Canada – and the PNLA needs teams like Victoria in order to grow this great sport in the Northwest.
