Rohrbach Report: Box Thoughts and Practices
Hey guys sorry it has been a while but I have been working on getting ready for this up coming season. It was great to be back in Seattle for a while and I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with the Washington Stealth. I don't know about you guys but I LOVE box lacrosse. It is a great twist on our favorite outdoor game, it is only right that we bring the box world into our lives with open arms and open minds.
I know many people were concerned about the fights on opening night but the second game didn't have any. Although fights are not part of the outdoor game, the indoor game is pretty much hockey on your feet. The same players fighting in hockey during the winter take their skates off in the summer and play box. It is only natural that fights overlap. Also, fighting is not encouraged. There is a five minute major penalty for each fight, which can change a game. A fight can also fire up a team and fans giving them the energy and drive to shift the momentum of a game. Fights have been a part of box since the beginning and even though I hope I don't have to drop gloves this summer, it is part of the game that shouldn't be changed. This does not mean go out and drop gloves guys, let your play talk for you instead.
This fall and winter have been great opportunities to build strength and gain some muscle weight but we have switched to lighter weights and higher reps in order to get faster and leaner. We are increasing the amount of running and truly getting fired up for the season. Practices start Monday with 3, 6 am practices a week. This is when the coaches find out who put in the work over the off-season. Some of you still have time before practices start but try not to have any regrets. It is one thing to say you live with no regrets but it is another to actually do it. Never regret not working hard enough. As my Dad often says, "Well done is better than well said."
I'm off to the NCAA Regional D3 leadership in New Jersey this weekend so I will hopefully pass on some new thoughts soon. Keep working hard in the classroom and on the field, let me know if there is anything you want me to cover or focus on.
